STOP THE PRESSES! Award winning Australian Animation company delves into Indie comics! The following blurb is from the Eye Candy
animation web site ...
'Eye Candy turned this funny 2D hippo comic character into a realistic 3D character that will be used as the seed to a feature length animated movie. Hairbutt the Hippo is a comic book
series developed by Jason Paulos of Rat Race Comics and is the story of a nasty tempered and hygienically impaired hippopotamus who makes a living as a private detective feeding off the misfortunes and misadventures of
hippies, magicians and mobsters. We created and rigged Hairbutt to look like he had just gotten off the beach and was taking a quick shower to wash the salt off, only to be surprised by one of the local crabs!'http://eyecandyanimation.com:80/portfolio/hairbutt/
Below are some conceptual images used in the making of the above short clip |

It's been a long time between updates, but rest assured that all is well in the Rat Race Comics camp ... a career change from graphic
designer to freelance storyboard artist meant more time at home with the baby, hence more distractions. I'm back on track however and have finally completed the final EEEK! comic and the long awaited (by me anyway)
collected EEEK! trade paperback thanks to www.Lulu.com!A big thanks to Tom Spurgeon at
http://www.comicsreporter.com/ for the nice write up of Hairbutt Funnies. Unfortunately I've lost the direct link.
Check out the latest issue of Dee Vee. I collaborated with Daren White on a superhero romance story called 'Blind Love'. |

old stuff For those who are interested, DC comics contacted me last year regarding the just completed 'Bizarro' deluxe hardcover book, featuring work by a veritable 'who's who' of
'alternative' comics. It seems DC editor Joey Cavalieri had already picked up a copy of 'Hairbutt the Hippo Private Eye' in New York and was smitten enough to offer me a 5 page Green Lantern script penned by Jason
Yungbluth called 'It's Not Easy Being Green'. I'll post previews of my art with release dates for Bizarro 2 soon!
|
Since then plans have been shelved for a collection of Hairbutt reprints from Australian MAD magazine in favour of a brand new
project called 'Soft Boiled Tales', a one-shot that will re-introduce Hairbutt and pals to the world. This issue will feature a fully-painted 13 page Hairbutt the Hippo mis-adventure called 'Chariot's of the Clods'
(written by Bodine Amerikah & painted by me), as well as a 6 page Frank Miller parody called 'That Fat Bastard' (written/drawn by yours truly), as well as unpublished strips, all presented in the time honoured
format of colour cover with 32 page B&W interior art. 'Soft Boiled Tales' will be the usual 'High Adventure and Low Humour' fans have grown to love since Hairbutt's first ashcan in June 1989. Watch this
space for more details. |
