In 1996 Hairbutt began as a four page feature in Australian Mad magazine #346 and in Summer 1997 Rat Race
Comics released the first of three editions of 'Hairbutt the Hippo Private Eye'.
In 1997 Elgua Media published 'Bonzer: A History of Australian Comics', a prestige format coffee table edition based on the
'Ace' exhibition. Five Hairbutt covers were used throughout the book, with Issue 3 featured on the cover and on limited edition full colour stickers.
In 1998 the third issue of Hairbutt the Hippo Private
Eye was published by Rat Race Comics.
